A functional piece of art for your fireplace.
The DFA Fire Chair is an innovative, two-tiered fire grate.
It combines the attributes of a conventional horizontal fire basket and the more uncommon vertical fire grate.
The lower tier at the rear of the firebox is raised two inches to facilitate airflow and convection, and ensures that smoke from a smoldering fireplace (especially at ignition) travels at the rear of the firebox and up the flue, as opposed to into the dwelling room.
The upper tier elevates the fire and brings it forward within the firebox while simultaneously enhancing airflow from logs at the lower tier.
After the ember bed has been established at the lower tier, the fire burns hotter and more efficiently than with other log holders.
Architect Daniel Frisch, AIA, designed the patent pending Fire Chair when contemplating how to make fires burn better in his farmhouse’s extra-large fireplace, and especially to keep smoke from escaping into the home.
The vertical bars at the front of the DFA Fire Chair prevent wood from kicking out into the room, easing the task of tending and managing the fire (and preventing nearby fabrics and rugs from burning). Once the fire and the ember bed are well established, wood can be tossed into the fireplace similar to a wood stove.
Build a Better Fire.
The DFA Fire Chair is both BEAUTIFUL and SUSTAINABLE,
a functional piece of art for your fireplace.
With a hotter and cleaner fire, less creosote is discharged, and therefore, there is less creosote to adhere to the flue or to escape into the atmosphere. The hotter, cleaner fire lessens the risk of chimney fires and reduces the greenhouse gasses typically produced by wood burning fireplaces.
The Fire Chair is manufactured by Alpine Metal Products in Easton, Pennslvania.
Parts are laser-cut from 1/4” steel plate, assembled and welded together.
The Fire Chair is finished in high-heat, matte black paint.
Avaialble in two sizes: 28 and 22 inches wide. Prototypes are complete and ready to display.
Aesthetically, the Fire Chair is designed in the (modern) form of an abstracted seated figure.
The Fire Chair helps build a hotter and cleaner fire decreasing creosote build-up and discouraging smoke from entering your room. Notwithstanding, when using the Fire Chair the following best practices should be observed:
Always burn seasoned wood – hardwoods like ash, maple, oak, hickory are preferred. Burning evergreen species and/or manufactured logs (Duraflame, for instance) is strongly discouraged.
All chimneys should be professionally cleaned annually to prevent creosote build-up. All fireplaces should also be regularly inspected for failing grout and cracks in the firebox and flue.
The Fire Chair has been painted with a high heat tolerant paint. Notwithstanding, the hot fires created, especially at the lower tier, may cause this paint to flake over time. In no way does the flaking of paint negatively influence the performance of the Fire Chair.
